Spiritual Legacy
My spiritual legacy
is an open window
on a cool summer night…
crickets, frogs, cicadas
…a cacophony of sounds.
My spiritual legacy is
memories intimately woven
into the light of my soul.
My spiritual legacy
Is rooted in a childhood
rich in love from soul kin
so long in my life’s periphery
that they became one with
my own internal history.
My spiritual legacy
is not my own
as I am intimately bonded
with those who came before me.
My spiritual legacy
is one of great gifts and bounties
that I feel honor bound to repay.
My spiritual legacy
Is one of countless
hopes
prayers
dreams
loves
longings.
My spiritual legacy
is bound to
the soil
the air
the summer nights
the winter days
the spring afternoons
the fall mornings
the night songs
the morning hymns
of South Carolina.

Beautifull. What sparked you to write this poem? Your work has always been really full of rhythm. It lives in you.

Thank you so much sister Iyabo. Well, the poem was sparked by the contemplation that followed the death of a very dear friend/aunt. It reminded me that I have been gone for far too long.
